Therapist Coaching

Therapist coaching is an approach that therapists can use to help clients work towards their goals more effectively. It is rooted in the principles of coaching but is delivered by a trained mental health professional such as a therapist, counselor or psychologist. The goal of therapist coaching is to help clients identify and achieve their goals by using coaching techniques within a therapy session.

Therapist coaching involves several key elements, including:

1. Goal-Setting: The therapist helps clients identify their goals, desires, and aspirations and determine what steps they need to take to achieve them.

2. Action Planning: Once goals and objectives are established, the therapist coaches clients to establish actionable steps to achieve them. This involves developing a plan for implementing these steps and holding clients accountable to follow through.

3. Accountability: The therapist provides support and encouragement as clients work towards their goals, by providing regular check-ins and moving them forward during therapy sessions.

4. Structure and Feedback: Therapists use coaching techniques to provide feedback on client progress by identifying areas of potential vulnerability, skill-building or growth in areas of mental health, the relationships, and everyday life. The therapist provides regular checkpoints and uses those to structure subsequent sessions effectively.

The goal of therapist coaching is to facilitate client progress and self-discovery by using a forward-looking, solution-focused approach that emphasizes individual strengths and personal resources. While there are some similarities between therapist coaching and traditional psychotherapy or counseling, therapist coaching is specifically structured with the aim of helping clients achieve concrete results within their lives.
